GOLF GLOSSARY

Glossary of golf terminology

D

Divot
The casualty of the golf shot. A divot is the grass that is removed when a player strikes the ball and the turf beneath. Divots are a part of the game, and as long as replaced or filled in with sand, are not shunned. Divots made on the putting green however are expensive to fix and generally discourteous to everyone.

Dormie
A term used in match play when the best the trailing player can do is a tie. A match is dormie when the leading player is up as many holes as the holes that remain. For example: Leading your opponent by two holes with two holes to play means the match is dormie.

Driving Range
A designated practice area reserved for hitting balls and not needing to retrieve them. Unlike on a course, no score is kept, other than how many times you can hit the ball tractor, which is the guilty pleasure of any lover of golf.

Dynamic Balance
Used to describe the appropriate transfer of weight throughout the swing.
