Glossary of golf terminology
T
Texas Wedge
Another word for a putter used off the green. Used mostly as a
safe alternative to chipping. The term developed as a result of
the tight conditions of the burnt summer fairways in Texas golf.
The ball had such little room beneath it, putting the ball from
the fairway on short range chips was a much safer play.
Tier
A new level on a tee, fairway or green. Many modern greens made
today have multiple tiers, meaning if you hit the ball on the
wrong tier, you will have to putt up or down a large slope to
the hole.
Topped Shot
A shot generally caused by lifting the head prematurely. The bottom
of the club strikes the top of the ball, resulting in a weak,
bouncing ball with overspin. These shots are plentiful when water
is 10 yards ahead.
